Looking Back

Looking down the cliffs we walked up

The area around Pamukkale was first developed as a spa by the Greeks, and used later by the Byzantines as well as a healing center based in the city of Hierapolis which crowns the top of the cliffs and the hills covered in calcium carbonate lined pools.

After paying our 5 YTL fee to get passed the elderly man in a tiny booth on a dirt trail we dutifully took off our shoes to comply with the ancient sign enforced only by the honor code. We mingled with mostly Russian tourists wandering around over the white rocks with very little on - it was a hot day, we'll give them that. We waded through pools and walked all over the rock, which is covered in millions of tiny ridges that look like the ridges in the sand at the beach near the shore - only hard and bright white. There is maybe a kilometer of pure white rock that covers one hillside/set of cliffs, and there are pools - manmade and naturally occuring - all over the place with warm spring water running all over the place. It's very open and we Americans marveled at the very low level of development. It was beautiful though!
